1920s fever has hit the fashion world

THE GREAT GATSBY

Leonardo Di Caprio as Mr. Gatsby

Like it or not, there couldn't be a more appropriate opening attraction for the Cannes Film Festival than Baz Luhrmann's 3D The Great Gatsby. The extravagant Jazz Age festivities that Luhrmann organises embody exactly the glamorous image that Cannes likes to project, while, conversely, the movie's sparkling soirées owe less to actual 1920s America than to a platonic fantasy of an eternal, orgiastic Cannes gala – palm trees, red carpets and all.

Controversially, Luhrmann depicts the 1920s as the age When Bling Was King, using hip-hop style to draw comparisons between two periods of artistic creativity and of social and financial excess. Hence a soundtrack overseen by Jay-Z, featuring thunderous R&B rhythms over period newsreels, rappers in cars laden with crates of Moët (should have been Cristal, surely), snatches of Beyoncé and Florence Welch and it sort of works – that is, it's distracting only up to a point, but never fully makes its impact. Rather than go all out with anachronism, as in his Moulin Rouge, Luhrmann patches little funky surprises into what's otherwise a surprisingly faithful adaptation, unambiguously set in the 1920s.

With ‘The Great Gatsby’, its no surprise that 1920s fever has hit the fashion world. Dipped waistlines, fringe and luxury were the style staples of the glamorous era- but be sure you don’t mix up ‘style inspo’ with ‘costume dressing’. Interpret the Gatsby trend into your summer wardrobe, rather, with some high fashion sunnies. These Giorgio Armani beauties are sure to make you stand out for your fashion know-how without having to do the Charleston.

The spotted tortoise frame, leather side panels and hook around arms nod- but don’t scream- to the driving glasses that were popular at the time. The quirky style would be perfect on guys or gals paired with a laid back summer look. While Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ hits theaters on Monday, these puppies are sure to remain at the height of style even after the movie’s star has faded. Available at Sunglass Hut stores for 350 Euro.

The Power of Desert Flower

Waris Dirie was born into a nomadic clan in Gaalkacyo, Somalia in 1965. At the age of thirteen, she fled her family in order to escape an arranged marriage to a much older man. She landed in London where she lived with and worked for wealthy relatives. Waris later worked at a local McDonald's, trying to make ends meet after a falling out with her hosts.

By chance, Waris was discovered by photographer Terence Donovan, who helped secure for her the cover of the 1987 Pirelli Calendar. From there, her modeling career took off, scoring advertisements for top designers such as Chanel, Levi's, L'Oréal and Revlon.
In 1987, Waris played a minor role in the James Bond movie The Living Daylights. She also appeared on the runways of London, Milan, Paris and New York City, and in fashion magazines such as Elle, Glamour and Vogue. This was followed in 1995 by a BBC documentary entitled A Nomad in New York about her modeling career.
In 1997, at the height of her modeling career, Waris spoke for the first time with Laura Ziv of the women's magazine Marie Claire about the female genital mutilation (FGM) that she had undergone as a child, an interview which received worldwide media coverage. That same year, Waris became a UN ambassador for the abolition of FGM, and later paid her mother a visit in her native Somalia.

In 1997, Waris abandoned her modeling career to focus on her work against female circumcision. That same year, she was appointed UN Special Ambassador for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation. In 2002, she founded the Waris Dirie Foundation in Vienna, Austria, an organization aimed at raising awareness regarding the dangers surrounding FGM. Waris followed that in January 2009 with the establishment of the PPR Foundation for Women’s Dignity and Rights’, an organization she founded along with French tycoon François-Henri Pinault (CEO of PPR) and his wife, Hollywood actress Salma Hayek. Waris has also started the Desert Dawn Foundation, which raises money for schools and clinics in her native Somalia.
Waris has received many prizes and awards for her humanitarian work and books

She also supports the Zeitz Foundation, an organization focused on sustainable development and conservation.

Yesterday evening, at 20:04:13 I attended the Fashion Show Fashion Show with KD12 Maluo, Xuz, Marroi and Yummie Tummie in Schwanenhöfe Dusseldorf.
The reception was very good and stung people from afar in the eye, since many people standing in front of the hall and already drank Prosecco and ate finger food.

Inside, they welcomed us with drinks like the popular Italian premium brand "Scavi & Ray" that produce delicious prosecco. Furthermore, you could see so-called "ready-to-wear rods", where the designer of the clothes were designed.

The coveted "First Row" was for the press, as well as additional benches reserved for various photographers and provided, which of course, were occupied during the fashion show also up to the last place. My companion Stela Alves, who is a great photographer and incredibly great dressed woman watched with keen eyes of the designer clothes that were worn by great models. My favorite here was the designer Anastasia Zakraoui and an amazing model Keziah Claudine Navie.
The fashion collections impressed with bold, colorful summer colors and light and transparent fabrics. There were many floral pattern and different colors that went together and posed a "Washy" look. In addition, we looked cool and extraordinary leather bags, and round sunglasses, which were reminiscent of the 80's and "original vintage" look and at the same time was that the highlight for me.
